Biomolecular Imaging Center (BIC)

The state-of-the-art high resolution imaging center at the Harry S Truman Memorial VA Hospital in Columbia, MO is critical to studies in all fields with the ability to provide quantitative and qualitative imaging information applicable to research studies not only in medicine but from understanding engineering components all the way to they study of plants.

The BIC houses:
  • a Micro-MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)
  • a Micro-PET (Positron Emission Tomography)
  • a Micro-SPECT/CT (Single Photon Emission Tomography/Computerized Tomography)
Research projects supported by the TVAMRF are conducted under the approval of the VA Research and Development committee whose responsibility is to ensure projects conducted at the VA addresses the criteria in the VA Research Mission.

The VA Research Mission

The research process in VA starts with a tight focus on the everyday health needs and concerns of Veterans, and with consultation with national and regional VA clinical leaders. Solutions are identified and developed through careful, rigorous research in labs and clinics, and sometimes in the community. These solutions are then applied to patient care, or translated into new or improved programs, as rapidly as possible.

  1. To improve Veterans’ health and well-being via basic, translational, clinical, health services and rehabilitative research;
  2. To apply scientific knowledge to develop effective individualized care solutions for Veterans;
  3. To attract, train, and retain the highest-caliber investigators, and nurture their development as leaders in their fields; and
  4. To assure a culture of professionalism, collaboration, accountability, and the highest regard for research volunteers’ safety and privacy.

VA Research fosters dynamic collaborations with its university partners, other federal agencies, nonprofit organizations, and private industry—thus furthering the program’s impact on the health of Veterans and the nation.
